ImageSENDA DEL PINAR DE NAVARREDONDA
Next to the Gredos Parador Nacional you will find PR-AV19, the path of Pinar de Navarredonda. It’s a short path (3 km) that can be covered in two hours. It goes through a hundred-year-old Scots Pine or Scotch Pine (Pinus sylvestris) wood, allowing you to perfectly know the dynamics of a mature and fully preserved pine wood. The oldest mentions regarding this wood date back to the 15th century. It was also Alfonso XIII’s usual hunting spot. Download PDF >>

Fiesta del Calbote

With the arrival of November, when the chestnut bears its fruits, many municipalities of Avila embark on the celebration of the fiesta del calbote or roasted chestnut festival (calbote is how they call the chestnut after it is roasted).

The tradition of going to the countryside and roast chestnut is still alive in most towns in the south of Avila, and has been relaunched in places as Cuevas del Valle, where every year takes place La Calbotada so that everybody can revive or get to know this tradition.
Thus, every November 1st the town square becomes a improvised field where the chestnut get roasted in bonfires made of pine needles, provided by the Cooperativa del Castañar.
