AMONG CHESTNUTS AND PINE WOODS. The Castañar de las Huertas path go through hundred-year-old chestnut woods. Of interest: the chestnut flora, the landscapes, some stretches are especially shadowy and enjoyable in summer. Any time of the year is ideal to visit it, any season, even summer, because it's a route through the coolest valley bottoms of the Barranco area. In autumn the mushrooms can be an incentive and in winter the snow-covered peaks are the ideal landscape for the bare chestnuts. The starting point is located in Cuevas del Valle, at the Roman paved road. |
On the trail of the Roman. The Roman paved road of Pico port, according to the Cuevas city council, it is one of the best preserved in Spain (1st and 2nd centuries BC) and a good example of the engineering works left by the Romans. It has endured the passing of the herders and the seasonal migration of livestock. The ruins of the Portazgo, the customs port, can still be seen. Go for a walk along the stretch leaving from Cuevas which is being restored bit by bit, or go to the top of Pico port by car (about 4 km). |
